Let’s start with Well-being
In recent years, discussions in the Journal of JSCE have sought to make visible those who
have not been adequately included in society and to reconsider the nature of infrastructure
from that perspective.
What has emerged is the realization that those engaged in civil engineering are not exempt from
these issues themselves. The well-being of practitioners, including their working styles,
relationships, and physical and mental health, is deeply connected to the sustainability of
the profession and society at large.
This special issue turns the focus inward, emphasizing that maintaining one’s own well-being
is not a self-centered act but a foundation for broader social contribution.
By exploring the interplay between “self-interest” and “altruism,” the issue highlights how individual
awareness and small daily actions can expand to influence organizations, communities, and society.
A conceptual model illustrates this cycle, showing how well-being circulates between individuals
and the wider social context.
The issue is structured in four parts: an introductory discussion on the concept of well-being and
survey of current industry practices; nine case studies showcasing initiatives by governments, companies,
and individuals and a roundtable dialogue among children, professionals, and practitioners.
Together, these contributions encourage readers to reflect on their own relationship with happiness
and consider how new forms of civil engineering might emerge from everyday life and practice.
